By Bishop Gregorios of Mesaoria
Today, our Church celebrates the memory of Saint Thyrsos, also known as Therissos, Bishop of Karpasia.
Saint Thyrsos (better known as Therissos) was one of the three Bishops of Karpasia during the early Christianity period. Little is known about his life. Although his life is unknown to Cypriot chronographers and synaxaristes, according to the Tradition of the Church, Saint Therissos was Bishop of Karpasia and became an ascetic near the town of Aegialousa, where today there is a temple of the 14th century dedicated to his memory. Near the sacred pilgrimage, there is holy water, which can cure the eye pain and skin diseases.
The displaced people of the town of Aegialousa and Karpas peninsula look back with nostalgia to the great feast dedicated to his memory, during which many faithful ask his blessing, and expect the liberation and resettlement in all the Turkish-occupied parts of the northern Cyprus.
