Todady our Church honors the memory of Saint Poimen, one of the great ascetics of the Egyptian desert, who was an example of humiliation and became a mentor to countless monks and Christians. We also honor the memory of St. Liberius, Pope of Rome, who attended the First Ecumenical Synod in Nice in 325 AD., who, because of the persecutions by the Emperors advocating the Arian heresy, he deservedly earned the title of Confessor of the Orthodox Faith.
Today, the memory of the new martyr Phanourios is also commemorated, who is especially popular and many are turning to him for help, especially to find lost objects. The relation of the Saint to the manifestation of things or persons is not based on analogous events in his life, but relates to the way in which he appears.
Specifically, the Saint, for whom there is no information until the 14th century, first came to prominence when an old temple was found in an excavation on the island of Rhodes, with pictures of various Saints. The only image depicting the figure of the Saint was a military saint, with a cross in his right hand, recounting the 12 martyrs he had suffered and bearing the name “Saint Phano”. The then Metropolitan of Rhodes, Neilos, renovated that temple and dedicated it to the Saint who appeared, that is, to Saint Phanourios.
