By Bishop Grigorios of Mesaoria
The Orthodox Church commemorates today Saint and Hieromartyr Peter, Archbishop of Alexandria.
Hieromartyr Peter of Alexandria was the successor of Archbishop Theonas. He was known for his devotion to the Orthodox faith and his love for God and his fellow humans. Bishop Meletius of Lycopolis was condemned during a synod which was led by Peter of Alexandria in 306 AD. This was the reason why Peter of Alexandria was humiliated and threatened by the people, who accused him to emperor Galerius. So, Archbishop Peter abandoned discretely his position because he was worried about losing his life and also he was afraid of the reaction of the people. He was eventually beheaded in 311 AD, while he had served the Church of Christ for 12 years.
