The Church celebrates today the memory of Hieromartyr Theodoretus, Bishop of Antioch.
Saint Theodoretus was bishop of the Church of Antioch during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate, who tried in vain to restore paganism. The persecutions of the Christians reached Antioch.
Among the clergy who remained steadfast in their faith was Theodoritus, so he was arrested by the ruler of the city, who initially praised him for his education and virtues. However, when he failed to persuade him to sacrifice and worship the idols, he ordered his beheading, and Saint Theodoritus received the wreath of martyrdom.
