Archbishop Makarios of Australia, currently on a pastoral visit to South Australia’s “City of Churches,” attended a reception hosted by Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith of Adelaide. The event honored the Orthodox Church in Australia, celebrating its 100th anniversary.
The reception took place at Adelaide City Hall on the evening of Monday, June 24. Distinguished guests included Bishops Silouan of Sinope and Bartholomew of Charioupolis, local dignitaries, clergymen of the Holy Archdiocese, and representatives from Greek Orthodox parishes, organizations, institutions, and schools of the local Church.
Upon his arrival, Archbishop Makarios received a warm welcome from Mayor Lomax-Smith, who lauded his work and ministry, as well as the enduring contributions of the Orthodox Church to Adelaide and Australia. In his remarks, Archbishop Makarios expressed gratitude to the Mayor for her honorary initiative and commended her for fostering mutual respect and cooperation during her tenure. He also thanked Minister Tom Koutsantonis for his unwavering support to the Holy Archdiocese and requested that similar sentiments be conveyed to the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas.
Reflecting on the history of the Holy Archdiocese from its founding to the present, Archbishop Makarios acknowledged the many difficulties and great challenges faced by Greek immigrants. He highlighted their deep faith, determination, toil, and sacrificial spirit. “The grace of the Holy Spirit blessed their efforts and enabled our Church to grow and flourish,” he noted, detailing the current works and charitable endeavors of the Holy Archdiocese. Concluding, the Archbishop emphasized unity: “Only when we are united, in a spirit of love, can we prosper and positively influence those around us, bearing witness to Christ. Only when we are united can we shine as individuals and, collectively, as a community.”
Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Tom Koutsantonis, also spoke, praising Archbishop Makarios’ impactful presence in Australia. He highlighted the Archbishop’s significant contributions to public life and assured him of ongoing support from the local Premier, the Government, and himself. “We are proud that you are our Archbishop,” he added.
