Issues of protection of religious freedom, as well as issues of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, were raised during the meeting of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Palace, with the Secretary-General of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (IAO) Maximos Harakopoulos and the President of the General Assembly, member of the Russian Duma, Sergei Gavrilov.
In fact, in the aftermath of the Turkish decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque, the IAO leadership presented the actions it undertook to raise awareness of the international public, referring in particular to the publication of a volume dedicated to the iconic Hagia Sophia, photo competition on the temples of Hagia Sophia – around the world – but also on the application for recognition, by the Council of Europe, of a cultural route on “The European route of the monuments of the Wisdom of God”.
In addition, it was mentioned that the IAO was founded in 1993 on the initiative of Konstantinos Mitsotakis and it was noted that its next General Assembly will be held in Crete on July 22-24, which is a vote of confidence in Greece to deal with the pandemic but also a positive message in the context of strengthening religious tourism.
The meeting was attended by the Counselor of the Embassy in the Diplomatic Office of the Prime Minister, Grigoris Delavekouras.
