United States sanctions against Turkey were not intended to punish its behavior but a sign it has overdone it, with the purchase of S-400s from Russia and its behavior in the East Mediterranean region, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Wednesday.
Addressing the online 2nd Southeast Europe & East Med Conference organized by the Delphi Economic Forum, Dendias also called on Turkey to allow a peaceful period and asserted that Greece is always prepared to participate in constructive dialogue as long as Turkey stops aggressive behavior.
In a question by the panelist on EU’s stance with Turkey, the foreign minister said Greece’s European partners could convey clearer messages, but the EU does see Turkey’s stance as a European problem rather than an inter-country one.
It would be preferable that Turkey remains in the West, Dendias said, but it must understand what the limits are. Sanctions help clarify these limits and help Turkey remain within the western alliance, he said.
