Archbishop Elpidophoros of America referred to his late predecessor, Iakovos, describing him as ever-memorable and saying that in the Archdiocese they keep alive the legacy he left behind.
“65 years ago today, the ever-memorable Archbishop Iakovos was enthroned as Archbishop of North and South America. His legacy lives on in the success and prosperity of our Church. Memory Eternal!” Archbishop Elpidophoros posted on social media.
On February 14, 1959, Iakovos was elected Archbishop of North and South America, with his enthronement marking the beginning of a new era for the Greek Orthodox Church in America. Archbishop Iakovos retired in 1996 after 37 years of ministry, acclaimed for his contribution to religious unity, the renewal of Christian worship and the defense of human rights.
