For one more year, the procession of the sacred relic of St. Spyridon was held in Corfu, while the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, followed the long procession.
St. Spyridon’s summer procession has been going on for 300 years, reminding all believers of “the miracle of St. Spyridon”, who according to religious tradition saved the island from the Ottomans in 1716.
The people of Corfu called on the patron of the island, Saint Spyridon, to intervene and save the island. Thus, on August 9, 1716, a terrible storm broke out on the island, which “crushed” the ships of the Turks, while the Ottoman soldiers fled, fearing the monk, that is, Saint Spyridon, who expelled them by holding a lit torch.
“It is an honour and a pleasure to be here today in Corfu, as it is a great day for the local church and the island,” the Minister of Culture told ANA-MPA.”We must join forces here. We have to unite forces to do the best we can. We owe it to both Greece and the Greeks,” the Minister of Culture said.
Metropolitan Ieronymos of Larissa and Tyrnavos, Metropolitan Dorotheos of Syros, Tinos, Andros, Kea, Mykonos, Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Kimolos, Kythnos, Folegandros and Sikinos, as well as Metropolitans Timotheos of Thessaly, Theocletos of Stagoi and Meteora and Stephanos of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos attended the summer procession of the sacred relic that lasts more than two hours, officiated by Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontian Islands.
