Ambassadors from 19 countries, together with the Mayor of Plovdiv, Ivan Totev, spoke about the mosaics of the Episcopal Basilica of Plovdiv (Philippopolis), which has been restored in the framework of the excavation, restoration and presentation of the Roman mosaics, supported by the “America for Bulgaria” Foundation.
The head of the “America for Bulgaria” Foundation, Nancy L. Schiller, said that the Episcopal Basilica will become not only a wonderful historical landmark, but also a cultural, tourist and community centre. The messages emanating from the evolution and completion of the project will inspire future generations, she noted.
The new “face” of the Episcopal Basilica, after the completion of the restoration, will be revealed on September 26, 2019, the day when the mosaic floors, columns and all the architectural finds were discovered and have been revealed to date.
Archaeologist Zheni Tankova said that the last find in the area is an ancient Greek inscription from the beginning of the 2nd century, which was discovered only last week. The Episcopal Basilica is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
