Churches in Greece to remain closed to faithful for a week

The churches will be closed to the faithful from Sunday, January 3, 2021, until January 11, 2021, and no Blessing of the Waters ceremony will take place outdoors on the day of the Epiphany.

The Divine Liturgy for the Epiphany will be carried out inside the churches by the priests without the presence of believers, Greek Government Spokesperson Stelios Petsas said, and after January 11, 2021, the believers will be allowed to attend the Sunday Divine Liturgy under the restrictions that applied at Christmas and New Year.

Stelios Petsas also announced that by the end of the second week of January the epidemiological situation in the country will be evaluated and based on this evaluation decisions will be made for the other sectors of social and economic activity.

“We will be defensive with whatever measures are required: we know the importance of defence for the protection of our lives. It is necessary that what we defend what we have achieved so far, not tear it down for a few days. First of all, we must stay home so that our children can return to school,” said the government spokesperson.

The traffic ban is valid from 21:00 to 5:00.
