The meeting of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete for the appointment of the three Metropolitans who will form the “Triprosopo” has been completed.
The three Metropolitans are Eugenios of Rethymno with seven (7) votes, Amfilochios of Kissamos with seven (7) votes, and Gerasimos of Petras with five (5) votes.
Remarkable was the absence of Metropolitan Andreas of Arkalochori from the Tripsosopo, who was considered to be among the “favorites”.
The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete commenced its meeting at 11 in the morning, to elect the three most prominent Metropolitans, and from the beginning of next year, when the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is convened; Crete will have the next Archbishop.
According to the Statutory Charter of the Church of Crete, the next Archbishop of Crete should be the Metropolitan of the island. The Patriarch, who has a strong opinion in the Sacred and Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarch, cannot make a hierarch who exercises his hierarchical duties outside Crete an Archbishop.
The Metropolitan in the vacant position that will appear after the election of the new Archbishop is elected by the Holy Provincial Synod of the Church of Crete with the new Archbishop as president after his enthronement.
