On Saturday, April 8, 2023, on the eve of the great feast of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem, the Patriarchate of Romania and the Archdiocese of Bucharest will organize the Palm Sunday procession in Bucharest, inviting hierarchs, priests, monastics, and lay believers from Romania’s capital and Ilfov county to take part.
This religious and missionary event is organized with the support of the Basilica Media Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate.
The procession will start at Radu Voda Monastery (4:15 pm) and will follow the following route:
Mărășești Boulevard, Dimitrie Cantemir Boulevard, Bibescu Vodă Street, Șerban Vodă Street (with a stop at St Spyridon Metropolitan Cathedral), Principatele Unite Street, Ienăchiță Văcărescu Street, St Ecaterina Street (with a stop at St Catherine church), Bibescu Vodă Street, the Patriarchate’s Hill and will end at the Patriarchal Cathedral (around 5:45 p.m.), where pilgrims will be greeted by Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
Central moments of the procession:
- 4:00 pm – the blessing of willow branches (palm branches) will be performed at Radu Voda Monastery. The blessed willow branches will be distributed to the faithful;
- 4:15 pm – the procession departs from Radu Voda Monastery to the Patriarchal Cathedral;
The procession will have three stops:
- 4:45 pm – the procession will be welcomed by priests and faithful at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Spyridon;
- 5:15 pm – the procession will be welcomed at St. Catherine’s Church by priests and students of the “Patriarch Justinian” Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest;
- 5:45 pm – arrival at the Patriarchal Cathedral, where the pilgrims will be greeted by Patriarch Daniel, who will bless the festal icon of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem. Patriarch Daniel will offer a prayer of blessing and address the pilgrims.
