The Governor General of Australia, General the Honourable David John Hurley AC DSC (Retd), accompanied by his wife, Linda Hurley, arrived in Athens on Monday, 1 May 2023, as part of his official visit to Greece.
Upon arrival, Mr. Hurley was welcomed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, responsible for Economic Diplomacy and External Affairs, Mr. Costas Fragogiannis, while the Australian Ambassador to Athens, Mr. Athanasios Spyrou (Arthur Spyrou) was present among others.
The visit aims to confirm the close and unbreakable bonds of friendship between the two countries.
Today, Tuesday, the Governor-General of Australia will have consecutive meetings with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Ms. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, with the Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and with the shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs of SYRIZA, Mr. Giorgos Katrougalos.
On Wednesday, 3 May 2023, Mr. Hurley along with Mrs. Hurley will travel to Lemnos, the northeast Aegean island that was the base for the WWI Gallipoli campaign. There, they will take part in the anniversary events in honor of the ANZACs who fell heroically and rest in the cemeteries of Lemnos.
