More than 450 young individuals hailing from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth came together for the National Meeting of the Greek Orthodox Colleges under the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. Hosted by the College of Saint Spyridon in Sydney, this three-day gathering encompasses a range of sports and artistic engagements, drawing participation from several esteemed institutions: St. Spyridon, All Saints, and St. Euphemia from Sydney; St. John and Holy Unmercenaries from Melbourne; St. George from Adelaide; and St. Andrew from Perth.
The official commencement of the event unfolded on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 7, with a reverent Doxology performed by Archbishop Makarios of Australia at the Church of St. Spyridon in Kingsford. Enriching the service, a choir comprising students sang hymns and the apolytikia of the patron saints of the Greek Orthodox Colleges.
In an inspired and enlightening address to the youthful audience, Archbishop Makarios delved into the significance of the Greek term “antagonismos,” denoting collaborative pursuit towards a common goal devoid of discord. “You have gathered here to compete – not against each other,” he underscored, emphasizing their shared Orthodoxy, Greek heritage, and overarching aspirations, all under the nurturing umbrella of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
Drawing parallels between sports, art, and the venerable traditions of Ancient Greece and Orthodox Christianity, the Archbishop highlighted the virtues of perseverance, dedication, and faith inherent in both athletic and artistic endeavors. Encouraging the youth to draw inspiration from the saints and heroes of antiquity, he instilled confidence in their ability to surmount challenges and attain excellence.
Addressing the ethos of “Fair Play,” Archbishop Makarios underscored its pivotal role in fostering integrity, honesty, and virtue among participants. Concluding his address, he bestowed blessings upon all attendees, expressing hopes for enduring camaraderie and cherished memories forged during the forthcoming days.
Earlier, Archbishop Makarios was warmly received by Emilia Katsogianni, the Director of the College of Saint Spyridon.
