The Hellenic College Holy Cross reception, which took place in the main exhibition hall on July 1st, began with time for catching up with HCHC classmates, professors, and friends. Dr. Demetrios Katos, president of HCHC, welcomed attendees with an invitation “to dream together, to come up with new programs.”
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America spoke about the crucial role that HCHC plays in the growth and flourishing of the Archdiocese. The Archbishop noted that while we have made progress in shoring up the accreditation and funding for the school, we must continue in this effort to complete the journey towards stability: “We cannot shirk the responsibility to ensure the success of the school for future generations.” Archbishop Elpidophoros also honored one of HCHC’s Board of Trustees members and long-time donors Helen Carlos, whose commitment to both the Church and to theological education calls to mind another great female philanthropist, St Melania the elder, who financially supported the theological endeavors of patristic authors in Late Antiquity. President Katos shared a promotional video featuring students and faculty of HCHC, and noted that the school’s enrollment has doubled in the past couple of years, a hopeful sign for our Archdiocesan seminary and undergraduate program. Dr. Katos also highlighted the new online MTS, which has enabled many of our laity to pursue supplementary theological education.
