Archibishop Ieronymos deemed the fact that Metropolitan Ieronymos of Kalavryta and Aigialeia was elected by a very large majority as an important message for unity.
He stressed that nowadays unity is very important both within the Church and within society and said, “Your election has shown that we should promote cooperation within the Church. We must be united.”
The newly-elected Metropolitan of Kalavryta and Aigialeia addressed the Archibishop, his predecessor, Metropolitan Amvrosios, the Metropolitans, and the clergymen, who attended his ordination and assured them that he would work hard for the Church.
He also pointed out that Archibishop Ieronymos had the virtues of wisdom and prudence and thus he was able to be a competent shepherd of the local church.
Then, Archibishop Ieronymos responded, “You have to be the shepherd, as other Great men were in the past. You bear a great burden of responsibility.” The Archbishop thinks that the fact that a Metropolitan was elected by a very large majority is very important for the Church and the Greek nation.
“Our Lord wants us to be united. The fact that the Church voted for you shows that you succeeded in uniting the Hierarchy. It is something that is not very common for one person. The unanimous vote is not something that concerns you personally, but the Hierarchy as a whole. You have been able to unite the whole Hierarchy and this is a big thing. I would like to stress that unity is very important both within the Church and within society.”
In addition, Archbishop Ieronymos reminded everyone that there are many sad examples that prove that conflicts sow division within society. Lastly, he added, “You are what we were looking for: the symbol of unity of the Church. Unity is our Lord’s will and it will allow the Church to chart its course.”
