As part of the events marking the 47th anniversary of the treacherous coup, an official memorial service was held at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Nicosia.
Ηonoring the memory of those who fell heroically on the day of July 15, 1974, defending democracy and the rule of law, a memorial service was held at 8.00 in the morning. Archbishop of Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomou, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis, the Minister of Defense Charalambos Petridis, the President of the Parliament Annita Dimitriou, the political state, and military authorities were present. The commemorative speech was delivered by the former President of the Parliament, Giannakis Omiros.
Giannakis reminded everyone that “the national humiliation of the Turkish occupation is still present and the call of national responsibility awaits and delimits our course.”Emphasizing the greatness of the sacrifice of these heroes, he concluded that “we are saddened today because we mention heroes and witnesses of the resistance. But we forget that the glorious dead do not leave. They remain alive and after death in the hearts of people to inspire, enlighten and guide”
This was followed by a memorial service at the graves of those who fell during the impending coup.
Finally, a minute’s silence was held and the National Anthem was played.
