April 1 is a special day for all Greeks since on this day, 66 years ago, the beginning of the liberation struggle of EOKA for the liberation of Cyprus from the British colonialists and its union with Greece was announced.
On this day, the custom is the arrival of an army procession to the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus and the raising at 7 am and lowering in the evening of the same day, of the Greek and Cypriot flags.
Also, on this day, an official doxology is performed, which this year took place at the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian in Nicosia. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiades, and Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus were present.
Also present were the Ministers of Education Prodromos Prodromou, Justice Emily Giolitis, and Defense Charalambos Petridis, the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Theocharis Lalakos, the Chiefs of Police, National Guard and Hellenic Force in Cyprus, members of the National Liberation Struggle of EOKA, clergy as well as other state actors.
After the Doxology, a memorial service was performed by Bishop Grigorios of Mesaoria, and wreaths were laid at the Imprisoned Memorials, the place of the horrible martyrdom of our young brothers, who remained unyielding in the provocations of the British.
