Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on European Union leaders in Brussels to support a ceasefire proposal aimed at securing peace in Ukraine.
“Everyone must ensure that Russia, as the sole instigator of this war, recognizes the necessity of ending it. This can be achieved through two forms of ceasefire that are easy to establish and monitor,” Zelensky stated.
He outlined the two key components of the proposal:
- An aerial ceasefire, prohibiting attacks on energy infrastructure and other civilian targets, including missiles, bombs, and long-range drones.
- A maritime ceasefire, which would halt military operations in the Black Sea.
Zelensky Meets NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels
As part of his diplomatic efforts, Zelensky also met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the emergency European Council meeting in Brussels.
In a post on Platform X, Rutte described their discussion as “an important dialogue with President Zelensky on the path toward lasting peace in Ukraine.”
Earlier, Rutte expressed “cautious optimism” regarding ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and the United States, signaling potential progress in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
