Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned a new wave of large-scale Russian drone attacks overnight, accusing Moscow of sabotaging efforts toward peace despite recent negotiations. The strikes, which involved around 117 explosive-laden drones, targeted Ukrainian cities and villages and came just a day after the United States announced a tentative agreement aimed at ending hostilities in the Black Sea region.
“This scale of attack following ceasefire negotiations is a clear message to the entire world that Moscow is not seeking real peace,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
The renewed violence has cast serious doubt on the feasibility of the proposed peace deal, which remains uncertain due to conditions laid out by the Kremlin. On Tuesday, Russian officials insisted that any agreement would only come into force once Western sanctions on Russian grain and fertilizer exports are lifted — a demand that appears far from being met. Analysts suggest that this delay may benefit the Russian military, which currently holds a tactical advantage on the front lines.
According to Zelensky, the Ukrainian air defense systems managed to shoot down a “significant number” of the drones. However, the remaining strikes caused widespread damage, hitting homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. The northern Sumy region and the central city of Kryvyi Rih were among the areas affected.
“These 117 drones are 117 pieces of evidence of how Russia continues to prolong this war,” Zelensky said.
He urged Ukraine’s allies to increase pressure on the Kremlin, calling for tougher measures, including more U.S. sanctions. His call comes as U.S. President Donald Trump pursues a diplomatic approach with Moscow, which has raised concerns in Kyiv about the future direction of Western support.
Zelensky’s statement highlights the growing frustration in Ukraine over what many see as Russia’s insincerity in negotiations, using diplomacy as a stalling tactic while continuing aggressive military operations.
As the war drags on, the Ukrainian leader once again appealed to the international community for solidarity, accountability, and decisive action to curb Russia’s continued assaults.
