Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with its European allies upon arriving at the EU Summit in Brussels today, declaring, “The Ukrainian people are not alone.”
Zelensky was welcomed by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Expressing gratitude for the EU’s unwavering support since the beginning of the war, Zelensky emphasized that Europe’s strong message of solidarity resonates with both the Ukrainian people and frontline soldiers.
European Council President António Costa stated that today’s discussions will focus on strengthening European defense, which will, in turn, bolster Ukraine’s security. “We are here to support Ukraine in achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace,” Costa affirmed.
Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen described the summit as a critical turning point for Europe. “Europe must be able to protect and defend itself. At the same time, we must ensure Ukraine is in a position to defend itself as well,” she stressed. She also highlighted the “Rearming Europe” initiative, unveiled by the European Commission two days ago, which aims to mobilize up to €800 billion to enhance the continent’s defense capabilities.
