Recent inspections by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica have revealed significant damage to two post-Byzantine churches in Marathon due to a recent wildfire. According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, the church of the Holy Apostles, located within the Oinoi enclosure, sustained severe damage to its roof and modern interior plastering. The church, which lacked mural decorations, was notably impacted by the blaze.
Additionally, the fire affected the post-Byzantine church of Saint Athanasios in Kalenzi, Marathon. While the church’s newer roof and interior suffered considerable damage, the frescoes inside were not harmed. The Ministry’s announcement provides a detailed account of the damage, highlighting the impact of the wildfire on these significant historical sites.
