The World Council of Churches (WCC) expresses condolences on the passing of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia in the following message:
He initiated a process of renewal that helped restore the church’s influence. By the late 1980s, the number of clergies, monasteries, and churches had significantly increased. Under his leadership, the church expanded its presence and reconnected with the faithful across the country.
He also oversaw the publication of a modern Georgian translation of the Bible during the period of reforms in the Soviet Union. During the civil conflicts of the 1990s, he consistently called for peace and reconciliation among opposing sides. The Church has played a significant role in national life.
Patriarch Ilia II served the World Council of Churches (WCC) as president from 1983-1991. The Georgian Orthodox Church joined the WCC in 1963 and remained a member until 1997 when they decided to withdraw their membership from the fellowship.
“On behalf of the World Council of Churches, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church,” said WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay. “We join our Orthodox sisters and brothers everywhere in giving thanks to God for the life and witness of Patriarch Ilia II. May God`s strength, peace and comfort be granted to all who mourn during this time of sadness and loss.”
