European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she had spoken by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following the massive missile strike on Kyiv that also damaged the European Union Delegation’s offices in the Ukrainian capital.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), von der Leyen wrote:
“I just spoke with President Zelensky and then with President Donald Trump, following the massive strike on Kyiv which also hit our EU offices.
Putin must come to the negotiating table.
We must secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine with firm and credible security guarantees that will turn the country into a steel porcupine.
Europe will fully play its part.
Our defence instrument SAFE, for example, will be important to strengthening the brave Ukrainian armed forces.”
The statement highlights the EU’s continued support for Ukraine’s defense and sovereignty, while emphasizing the need for credible security guarantees and diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war.
