The Vatican is deeply concerned about the situation in Gaza, where the ceasefire appears to have already collapsed due to the recent wave of violence, according to Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State of the Holy See.
“The Holy See is worried about the ceasefire in Gaza, which seems to have already ended because of the violent events of recent days,” Cardinal Parolin said. “However, we express our profound hope that the peace plan may still succeed.”
When asked about the difficult daily reality faced by Christians living in the West Bank, the Vatican’s Secretary of State described the situation as “particularly complex.”
“We cannot understand why these Christians, who live their lives peacefully, are being targeted by such persistent hostility,” Parolin noted. “It might be problematic to speak of persecution, but these are situations we cannot accept.”
Referring to the recent bomb explosion near Rome outside the home of RAI journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, Cardinal Parolin strongly condemned the act, emphasizing the growing threats to freedom of the press.
“These serious acts of intimidation against freedom of expression are deeply troubling,” he said. “We risk living in an increasingly intolerant environment, where free speech is no longer accepted. We want everyone to be able to express their views — with respect and objectivity — without becoming targets of such threats.”
