The Vatican confirmed today that the conclave to elect the new Pope will begin on May 7.
According to Vatican rules, the cardinals will attend a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on the morning of that day.
That same afternoon, the cardinals under the age of 80 who are eligible to vote for the pope will be sequestered in the Sistine Chapel for the closed-door voting process, which could take several days.
The Sistine Chapel has been closed to the public to allow for the necessary preparations.
