A mountaineer has published images of damage to the chapel of Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias) at the summit of Mount Taygetos, documenting harm to the site.
According to the allegations, roof beams have been torn out and reportedly used to light a fire, while bottles and other objects were found inside the chapel.
The images come after the recent maintenance and restoration work on the chapel, which sits at an altitude of 2,453 meters.
The works had been carried out on the initiative of Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis, with the support of the Natural Disaster Response Service of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS), as the chapel had suffered significant damage and remained without adequate protection from the exceptionally harsh weather conditions at the summit of Taygetos.
