During an official reception hosted by the President of the Olympic Committee in Milan on February 6, the President of Georgia, Mikheil Kavelashvili, commented on his meeting with the Vice President of the United States D.J. Vance and the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighting the warm references made to Georgia and to the Patriarch of Georgia.
President Kavelashvili said he was positively surprised by how well informed the U.S. Vice President was about Georgia’s Christian identity and traditions. According to the Georgian President, the Vice President spoke warmly of Georgia and even mentioned the Patriarch of Georgia, acknowledging the country’s deep Christian roots and commitment to traditional values.
In their conversation, the U.S. Vice President referred to the recent establishment of a National Day of Prayer in the United States on May 17. President Kavelashvili noted that when he mentioned that Georgia had already designated May 17 as the Day of Family Purity a decade ago, following an initiative of the Patriarch of Georgia, the Vice President reacted with genuine interest and pleasure.
He underlined that when discussions turn to family values, traditions, and especially Christian values, Georgians speak with confidence, as a nation with a long and profound Christian history.
President Kavelashvili also informed his American counterparts that Georgia will mark 1,700 years of Christianity this year, with major commemorative events planned across the country. He said this announcement was received with clear interest and appreciation, underscoring the respect shown for Georgia’s spiritual heritage and the pivotal role of the Patriarch of Georgia in safeguarding the nation’s Christian identity.
