The United States has described Greece as a “leader in counter-terrorism” and a “example for other countries to follow”, praising its determination and effectiveness in combating far-left and anarchist terrorism, according to the State Department.
Responding to a question from Kathimerini newspaper on Tuesday following recent remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio concerning Greece, a State Department spokesperson highlighted the long-standing security cooperation between Athens and Washington, describing it as one of the strongest partnerships of its kind worldwide.
“By jointly confronting far-left and anarchist terrorism, Greece and the United States have forged a longstanding security partnership that is one of the best in the world. Highlighting our shared losses at the hands of terrorists not only underscores the severity of the threat but emphasizes the value of our international cooperation,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson noted that references to the losses both countries have suffered as a result of terrorism underscore both the seriousness of the threat and the importance of international cooperation in addressing it.
The State Department further stated that Greece has demonstrated “ great strength” in tackling this particular threat, even during periods when other governments failed to recognise its severity adequately or underestimated it.
“Greece is a leader in the field of counter-terrorism and a model for other countries to follow in combating this threat,” the spokesperson stressed.
Regarding Rubio’s reference to the terrorist organisation “November 17”, the State Department said that the United States “will never forget” its representatives and personnel who lost their lives overseas while carrying out their duties.
In his speech, the US Secretary of State cited examples of far-left political terrorism from Greece, the United States and other countries as part of Washington’s position that the phenomenon constitutes a transnational threat.
