US President Joe Biden said he made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia would pay a “terrible price” and face devastating economic consequences if it invaded Ukraine.
Biden told reporters that the possibility of sending US troops on a ground operation in the event of a Russian invasion “was never on the table,” although the US and NATO would be required to send more troops to NATO’s east countries to strengthen their defense.
“I made it very clear to President Putin… that if he moves to Ukraine, the economic consequences for his economy will be devastating, devastating,” said the US president.
After a two-hour video conference with Putin during the week, Biden said he said to the Russian president that Russia’s position in the world would change “obviously” in the event of an invasion of Ukraine.
