A federal judge in Texas has blocked the implementation of a state law that would have required the display of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom beginning September 1.
Judge Fred Biery issued a preliminary injunction on Thursday, halting the law after a group of families from various faith backgrounds challenged its constitutionality.
In his 55-page ruling, Biery argued that the law is unconstitutional because it “takes a position, in an impermissible manner, on theological matters and officially favors Christian doctrines over other religions.”
He further noted that mandating the display of the Ten Commandments could send “a message of exclusion” to children of different faiths, leaving them with the impression that they “are outsiders who do not belong in their school community.”
