In an interview with the Athens–Macedonian News Agency, following her recent visit to Thessaloniki — her first since assuming office — during which she held a series of meetings and addressed the anniversary dinner “SEVE: 50 Years of Extroversion,” the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, spoke about her meeting with Metropolitan Filotheos and praised the Metropolis’ work in combating domestic violence. Drawing on her experience as a prosecutor in abuse cases, she discussed programs that help women break free from cycles of violence and build financial independence.
“We talked about these programs — how to help women escape a cycle of abuse, both physical and psychological, how this affects children, and the counseling services available. I told him about some of the initiatives I’ve been involved in, such as Dress for Success and Bottomless Closet, which help women return to the workforce so they can support themselves and their families, without feeling dependent on an abusive partner,” she said.
Reflecting on her meeting with the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, she emphasized the importance of religious freedom and independence, which she noted are central to President Trump’s platform and ideology. “I share these same values, and I think that was just one of the many wonderful reasons I wanted — and chose — to come to Greece.”
Guilfoyle also expressed particular admiration for her visit to the Church of Saint Demetrios, where guide Ioanna Trikouki introduced her to the church’s history and the sacred relics housed there. She also visited the crypt. “As a deeply religious person, it was truly a very special experience,” she remarked.
