UNESCO has condemned the reported strike that hit the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on June 15, describing the attack as a serious blow to one of Ukraine’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks.
In a statement released on Sunday, UNESCO expressed deep concern over the damage caused to the World Heritage site, officially inscribed as “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.”
According to the organization, the strike reportedly caused significant damage to both the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral, one of the most revered churches within the monastery complex. Adjacent historic structures, including parts of the Lavra’s fortification system and the Ivan Kushnik Tower, were also reportedly affected.
UNESCO reiterated its condemnation of attacks against cultural property, educational institutions, students, educational personnel, and media professionals protected under international law.
“Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education, and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion,” the organization stated.
The UN cultural agency emphasized that the protection of cultural heritage remains a priority, particularly during armed conflicts, as such sites represent an irreplaceable part of humanity’s shared legacy.
UNESCO also announced its readiness to support the relevant Ukrainian authorities in assessing the damage caused to cultural and educational institutions and in identifying urgent measures within its mandate.
