Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip can no longer be justified under the principle of self-defense according to international law.
Speaking to Austrian radio, Türk described the situation as “a displacement that is highly, highly questionable,” referring to the impact of the ongoing war on the civilian population.
“What we’ve seen in recent months bears no relation to respect for the fundamental principles of humanity,” said Türk. “You truly run out of words to describe what is happening.”
The UN official emphasized that Israel’s allies in particular must exert significant diplomatic pressure on the country to change its conduct in Gaza.
Türk’s remarks come amid growing global concern over the scale of civilian suffering in the conflict and increased scrutiny over Israel’s actions under international humanitarian law.
