Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is visiting Madrid today, Monday, where he is scheduled to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and be received by King Felipe VI.
This visit marks the first official trip by a Greek prime minister to Spain in 13 years and, according to government sources, signals a clear intention to strengthen bilateral relations, with a particular focus on economic and trade cooperation.
The visit takes place amid a complex international environment marked by multiple challenges. Discussions are expected to focus on international, regional, and European affairs, with particular emphasis on the latest developments in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Greece and Spain, both countries of the European South and the Mediterranean, face shared challenges such as migration and the climate crisis. They also share common positions on key European issues, including the EU budget, the need to support cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, as well as the importance of joint European investments in areas of common interest. These investments are expected to be supported through shared European funding, in line with the Draghi and Letta reports.
The meetings in Madrid are seen as an opportunity to deepen strategic cooperation between the two countries while contributing to broader European discussions at a critical geopolitical moment.
