Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance at Rome’s Palazzo Chigi on Friday for talks focused on bilateral relations, transatlantic cooperation, and ongoing global challenges, including the war in Ukraine.
At the outset of the meeting, Vice President Vance shared cautious optimism regarding diplomatic efforts related to the war: “We have a sense of optimism and positivity regarding the Russia–Ukraine negotiations. I will brief the Italian Prime Minister accordingly,” he stated.
The American vice president also emphasized the broader scope of the discussions: “We will talk about the relations between our two countries, as well as some trade negotiations—not only between Italy and the United States but also involving the European Union.”
Prime Minister Meloni underlined the strength of the Italy–U.S. partnership, stating, “Italy and the United States are absolutely committed to strengthening their cooperation.” She warmly welcomed Vance’s decision to spend Easter in Italy, noting it as a sign of the close friendship between the two nations.
“Italy can be a key partner in Europe and throughout the Mediterranean region. Our relationship with the United States is a privileged one,” Meloni affirmed.
She also described her recent meeting in Washington with President Donald Trump and his team as “fantastic,” underscoring her alignment with U.S. political leadership and shared strategic goals.
