The lawyer of former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, Evangelia Poulla, has accused Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus of adopting a derogatory attitude towards her client, including verbal threats of defrocking. She described the Archbishop’s tactics as “unacceptable and reminiscent of totalitarian regimes,” according to a report on sigmalive.com.
In statements to the Cyprus News Agency (KYPE) following Archbishop Georgios’ recent announcement, Ms. Poulla explained that the Archbishop granted Tychikos permission to hold the annual memorial service for his mother at a small chapel of St. George in Mesana, located about ten minutes outside the village and accessible only by a high-clearance vehicle. She added that the memorial was scheduled for a Saturday “so that other faithful could not attend.”
Ms. Poulla also expressed her regret that the Archbishop “continues to refuse to provide documents, including evidence and minutes, requested by Tychikos.”
She reminded that, through a letter dated June 18 addressed to the Secretariat of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, Tychikos formally requested certified copies of the decision issued by the Holy Synod acting as a Court on May 22, as well as the minutes of the Synod’s sessions on February 3, 2025, September 12, 2024, and May 22, 2025. Furthermore, he requested access to 20 pieces of evidence attached to the Archbishop’s document titled “Accusations against Metropolitan of Paphos Tychikos,” as well as any complaint or allegation made against him.
Ms. Poulla reiterated that none of these documents have been provided so far. She noted that several requests for the documents were made repeatedly before and after the latest Synod meeting but were met with silence and no explanation.
“We consider the Archbishop’s tactics unacceptable and reminiscent of totalitarian regimes,” concluded the lawyer for Tychikos.
