Twenty cases of the new coronavirus were detected on Mount Athos, as reported by makthes.gr, all in monks of the Holy Monasteries on the Athos peninsula.
Aristos Kasmiroglou, deputy commander of Mount Athos, explained that the 20 cases were located in the Holy Monasteries of Nea Sketi, Pantokratoros, and Karyes. So far all the cases are manageable, except for one, which is being hospitalized in Thessaloniki.
It is should be reminded that the administration of the first dose of the new coronavirus vaccine has started on Mount Athos and the current period is considered critical, to achieve immunity in the local population.
In any case, until today several of the monks have been vaccinated and the procedure will continue normally on Friday, informs Kasmiroglou.
Mt. Athos extends shutdown to visitors until April 15
The all-male monastic community of Mount Athos announced on Wednesday it will extend its ban on visitors to April 15, as part of measures against the coronavirus pandemic.
Additionally, staff or other essential visitors will be tested for the coronavirus at all entry ports to Mt. Athos.
