Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today that his country still intended to buy a second batch of anti-aircraft weapon systems from Russia, a move that sparked US sanctions and deepened the rift with Washington.
In an interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS’s Face the Nation, the Turkish president said no one could say to Ankara, a NATO ally, which defense systems should be purchased. Washington has repeatedly stated that the second batch of S-400s will almost certainly trigger new US sanctions.
Erdogan also said that Biden, who has repeatedly said that the promotion of democracy and rights and freedoms around the world was at the heart of his foreign policy, never raised human rights issues with Turkey.
