Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made some provocative statements about Hagia Sophia on New Year when he attended the Friday Muslim prayer.
According to Kathimerini.gr, the Turkish president deemed its conversion into a mosque as a “crown of 2020”, which was a year “full of pain for all humanity”.
At the same time, the representative of the AKP, Ömer Çelik, took a similar stance and made a post on Twitter: “Those who are disturbed by the operation of Hagia Sophia as a mosque and the joy that this event gave to our people are at war with everything that belongs to our nation. In addition, they hate the principle according to which the sovereignty belongs to our state unconditionally.”
