U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday that he could order military action against the government of Colombia, telling reporters that such an operation “sounds good.”
Speaking to journalists aboard the presidential aircraft, Trump described Colombia as “very sick” and claimed that the government in Bogotá was run by “a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States.”
“And he’s not going to be doing it very long. Let me tell you,” Trump said, apparently referring to Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
When asked directly whether the United States would carry out an operation against Colombia, Trump avoided giving a clear answer, reiterating only that the idea “sounds good to me.”
The Republican president’s remarks came shortly after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during a raid in Caracas and his transfer to New York, where the Trump administration intends to put him on trial on drug trafficking charges.
