U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may be willing to abandon Ukraine’s goal of reclaiming Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014 — a position starkly at odds with recent statements made by the Ukrainian leader.
“I think so. Crimea — that was 12 years ago,” Trump said when asked whether he believes Zelensky is prepared to “give up” the peninsula.
Trump’s remarks suggest a notable divergence from the firm stance Ukraine has maintained regarding Crimea, as Zelensky recently reaffirmed that reclaiming the region remains a key objective of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts.
