U.S. President Donald Trump announced today that he held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they agreed to visit each other and to immediately initiate negotiations through their respective diplomatic teams.
According to President Trump, the two leaders discussed a range of critical issues, including: the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, energy policies, Artificial intelligence, and the state of the U.S. dollar.
Trump emphasized that both he and Putin expressed a shared desire to end the war in Ukraine and prevent further loss of life.
In a statement following the call, Trump announced his intention to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to update him on the discussion:
“We also agreed that our respective teams would immediately start negotiations, and we will begin by calling President Zelensky of Ukraine to inform him about our conversation, which I will do right now,” Trump said in a post.
Russian state news agency TASS confirmed that the discussion covered Ukraine, the Middle East, and bilateral relations. It also reported that Putin invited Trump to Moscow and that the two leaders agreed to a future meeting.
According to the Kremlin, the phone conversation lasted an hour and a half, signaling a significant diplomatic step in U.S.-Russia relations.
