U.S. President Donald Trump referred to the profound contribution of Greek culture and community in shaping US, during the anniversary ceremony at the White House for the celebration of Greek War of Independence on March 25.
Donald Trump in his speech particularly mentioned the struggle of the Greek people for freedom and independence. In addition, the US President outlined the historical contribution of Greek culture with references to Homer and Aristotle. “The United States — and all of Western civilization — has been profoundly shaped by the extraordinary achievements of the Greek people, stretching all the way back to ancient times,” Trump said.
He also spoke about the contribution of the Greek American community to the formation of the US, arguing that this event is a celebration of the values, which are the foundation for America’s greatness. As he said, “The Greeks don’t ever quit. You don’t ever give up. That’s what we want.”
“And you embrace the American Dream and you keep faith in the blessings of Almighty God. And that’s great,” he added.
On his part, Archbishop Demetrios of America pointed out that the White House is the best place for Greek Independence Day Celebration, as it is a building that symbolizes the “lighthouse of freedom” for all peoples.
For many years, as has been reminded, the issue of freedom is the central message which the Greek American community wants to send at the anniversary ceremony, having as the basic guidelines the proper operation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the achievement of a just solution to the Cyprus issue.
