Three generations of Serbia’s Karađorđević royal family are visiting Mount Athos in a trip carrying particular historical and symbolic significance.
Crown Prince Alexander, his son Hereditary Prince Philip, and his young grandson Prince Stefan are staying at Hilandar Monastery, the historic Serbian Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos.
Prince Philip shared a video from their visit on Saturday, describing the occasion as a “historic moment” for both his family and Hilandar.
“For the first time in the centuries-long history of Hilandar, three generations of the Serbian royal family are staying simultaneously on Mount Athos, at the sacred imperial Lavra of the Nemanjić dynasty, Hilandar Monastery,” Prince Philip wrote.
The video shows the three members of the royal family touring the historic monastery accompanied by monks.
Crown Prince Alexander, Prince Philip and Prince Stefan also entered the monastery’s katholikon, where they venerated the holy icons, before continuing their visit around the monastic complex.
The presence of three generations of the Karađorđević family at Hilandar carries particular symbolism given the monastery’s prominent place in the spiritual, religious and historical heritage of the Serbian people.
