Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated he was pleased with his meeting today with Pope Francis in the Vatican. As Vucic said, in the Serbian journalists following him, the Pontiff reiterated the Vatican’s stance not to recognize Kosovo’s independence.
“The Vatican remains steadfast,” Vucic pointed out, and said he thanked Pope Francis “for the principled stand he has taken in dealing with the unilateral declaration of independence for Kosovo and for understanding the Serbian points of view.”
Aleksandar Vucic said the Pope encouraged him to continue the efforts to resolve all differences between Serbs and Albanians through dialogue and in a peaceful manner.
Vucic, expressing his personal view, said he would like to welcome Pope Francis to Serbia, but added that such a visit would need the approval of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) in advance.
The Serbian President also said he thanked the Pontiff “for the sincere support of the Holy See in Serbia’s efforts to become a member of the European Union”.
