The truly reasonable man has only one care, to obey and to be pleasing to God, the Lord of all, and to exercise his soul in how to be pleasing to God, by thanking Him for His great and excellent providence and the government of the whole world, whatever his position in life.
For it is absurd to thank the doctors when they give us bitter and disgusting medicine for the sake of the health of our body, but be ungrateful to God for what seems unpleasant to us and not to recognize that everything is done as it should and for our interest according to His providence. Because this recognition and faith in God is the salvation and the perfection of the soul.
