The Orthodox Church today celebrates the commemoration of the translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Nectarios, which took place on September 3, 1953.
This is a feast of living memory for the entire Orthodox Christian world, but it has special significance for the Christians of Cairo.
St. Nektarios spent a significant part of his life in Cairo. He was ordained Bishop of Pentapolis in the Church of St. Nicholas in Hamzawi, Cairo, and spent many years of his life as Patriarchal Commissioner of Cairo, residing in the Episcopal Residence, which is now an important museum space visited by thousands of faithful from around the world.
Every year, the memory of the translation of his relics is honored in Cairo in the small chapel located on the ground floor of the old Episcopal Residence building.
Bishop Stephanos of Ippon presided over the Divine Liturgy in a particularly mystical atmosphere, and the Chief Cantor of the Greek Community of Cairo, Alexandros Rigakis, sang the hymns. Also present was Metropolitan Nikodimos of Memphis, the Patriarchal Commissioner of Cairo.
