The International Judo Federation has imposed a five-month suspension on Serbian athlete Nemanja Majdov from all activities.
One month after the conclusion of the Olympic Games, the 28-year-old athlete was informed that he was being suspended for making the sign of the cross before and after his match, which took place during the Olympic Games in Paris.
The reason given was a violation of competition protocol regarding the display of religious beliefs.
Majdov had previously received a warning from the International Federation for making the sign of the cross before the Olympic Games at international tournaments he participated in.
Nevertheless, Majdov made it clear that he would not change his stance regardless of the consequences, and he plans to return to competition after the five-month suspension, according to his letter to the International Federation and his social media posts.
Furthermore, several Serbian athletes have rushed to express their support, including the renowned Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic.
